I recently received some feedback by Luca Pertile. Apparently some of the servers listed in the instructions below do not support FTP by mail anymore. So, here is a list of the ones that should work & a new server:
Thanks Luca!
I got these instructions from a newsgroup posting a few years ago. I have never tried them myself, but I have put them on this page, because it's something that you never really hear about on the Internet. Thanks to Smeagol for posting the instructions in the first place.
To get mail to deliver an ftp file you can send mail to ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com (or any other ftpmail server), the subject does not matter. The body of the message is where the commands are placed - here is an example of how to download the file /pub/povray/utilities/tmkr11.zip from ftp.povray.org: (to get a binary file you must tell it to uuencode the message) connect ftp.povray.org cd /pub/povray/utilities binary uuencode get tmkr11.zip quit You can use this method to get files from any ftp site. Hope this is helpful. -e PS: Here are some other ftp mail servers: ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com or ftpmail@cs.uow.edu.au bitftp@pucc.princeton.edu or ftpmail@lth.se bitftp@dearn or to bitftp@vm.gmd.de (Europe only) ftpmail@ftp.uni-stuttgart.de ftpmail@grasp.insa-lyon.fr or ftpmail@ieunet.ie bitftp@plearn.edu.pl or bitftp@plearn (Europe) ftpmail@doc.ic.ac.uk or ftpmail@sunsite.unc.edu -------- My WEB page: www.rt66.com/smeagol/ --------------------------- -------- Ground Up: www.rt66.com/smeagol/html/groundup.html ---------
